  21.      Look up in the sky, it's a blimp, it's a UFO ... it's an ultralight
  22. aircraft.

  24.      A small group of ultralight aircraft with blinking 
  25. lights were proba-
  26. bly to blame for the rash of Unidentified Flying Object re
  27. ports that jammed
  28. the switchboards of police departments in Westchester and R
  29. ockland counties
  30. between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. yesterday,police said.

  32.      "I 
  33. probably got 50 to 100 calls," said Peekskill state trooper Greg
  34. Porteus.
  35.

  37. Other area police departments averaged between six and 10 calls while
  38. some 20 calls came into Gannett We
  39. stchester Newspapers reporting a large,
  40. round object with red and white or gr
  41. een lights floating over their com-
  42. munities.
  43.  
  44.      According to Porteus, ult
  45. ralights are small, quiet, open-bodied air-
  46. craft that can move at very slow 
  47. speeds.  A group of ultralight fliers from
  48. nearby Stormville Airport in Dutch
  49. ess County have stirred up this type of
  50. commotion before, he said.
  51.  
  52.      "The majority of residents know who they are," Porteus said.
  53.  
  54.      However, an 
  55. employee who answered the phone at Stormville Airport said
  56. he didn't know if 
  57. any ultralights took off from there last night.
  58.  
  59.      Whatever it was, people 
  60. in many parts of the county were left guessing
  61. and gaping.

  63.      "It just sor
  64. t of stopped, it was hovering," said Cindy Alayne of Mount
  65. Vernon, who spotte
  66. d it near her home.  "You could see it was circular."
  67.  
  68.      "Your classic type of saucer-looking th
  69. ing," said Bobby Peters of
  70. Yorktown.

  72.      Peters said he was driving north o
  73. n the Taconic Parkway in Yorktown
  74. with his brother Nicky at about 10:10 p.m. 
  75. when they saw the lights.  "It
  76. was just such a perfect formation," he said.

  79. Other motorists also stopped to see the sight.

  81.      "It was hovering and the
  82. re were lots and lots of blinking red lights,"
  83. said Mary Anne Morris of South Salem.

  86.      Morris said she saw whatever she saw between 9:
  87. 45 p.m. and 10 p.m.
  88. while heading north on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Thor
  89. nwood.  She said
  90. it was about 1,000 to 1,500 feet above the ground.

  95. en men[sic].  However, he's not convinced that they're ultralight
  96. aircraft,ei

  99.      "They gotta be pretty darn good to fly in that formation," he said.

  102. Porteus said the after-hours flying aces are a nuisance, causing undue
  103. mental 
  104. anguish to area residents.

  106.      "It's dangerous," he said.  "Some people get 
  107. very upset about it."
